Virtual Reality

Until recently, it was extremely time consuming to produce animated walkthroughs with standard architectural software packages. Drawings and static renderings often fail to capture the spatial qualities of a building, but imagine being able to walk through a design or choosing between options for interior finishes in real time and in varying lighting conditions to find a decision. This is where video game render engines can exhibit their strengths. As evidenced by works produced by CG artists, video game render engines are capable of revealing incredibly nuanced details of light and movement that elevate the experience of an architectural walkthrough. Additionally, these 3dimensional spatial experiences provide opportunities to comprehensively explain projects and understand the experience of a building. In combination with the VR technology, in this case Oculus Rift, it enables a designer to step into the 3d model from his daily working place and experience it in a comprehensive way than it was previously possible. Capability, flexibility, data transfer and workflow between the current 3d modeler McNeel Rhino3d and the free available Epic Games Unreal Engine was tested and evaluated during this test case to define a possible additional tool for finding and testing design proposal within the design studio.
