Geometry Optimization

In recent years, architects and mathematicians have frequently investigated the rationalization of curved NURBS-Surface geometries into planar Quad meshes. These have then been used to determine the shape, distribution and orientation of facade panels. At the DRX 2012, we have been working together with researchers from Prof. Dr. Konrad Polthier's Department of Mathematical Geometry Processing at the FU Berlin.

The aim was to investigate how the algorithms that are embedded into their software JavaView can be utilized to create planar quad meshes for double-curved surfaces. While the experiments related specifically to minimal surfaces, we explored possibilities of expanding the workflow to account for other surface classes.
