Fraunhofer Institute for Applied and Integrated Security
The central task of the Fraunhofer Society is research with practical relevance, an objective which the society plans to promote more intensively in the immediate vicinity of the TU Munich campus. The Fraunhofer Research Campus in Garching, which will accommodate up to 6 institutes, will be realised on this site. A masterplan envisages the development of a forum for the exchange of scientific information between the research centre and the neighbouring natural sciences and engineering faculties and facilities of “Science City Garching”. The masterplan for the Fraunhofer Institute fits into this concept and formulates interdisciplinary interfaces, even within the planned building ensemble. The buildings of the various construction phases are located on a central common area which serves as an internal pedestrian access route and lends an impressive structure to the site. The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied and Integrated Security AISEC will move to the site in the 1st construction phase.
The new building consists of two U-shaped components which join to form a meander so that all research groups can be reached over short distances. The jointly used functions are housed in one part of the building which “clamps” the meander together and stands out with its façade design and construction volume, serving as the main entrance. The concept addresses the various functions of the building and creates a differentiated ensemble which connects with the Fraunhofer Research Campus through external spheres of varying quality.
The clear structure of the functional areas and the spatial interlinking in the centre, make the building a special place for the employees, creating an ideal environment for challenging research activities.
