Wind Tunnel Efficiency Centre
With the Wind Tunnel Efficiency Centre (WEZ) on the northern edge of its research and development site, Volkswagen AG expands its department of aerodynamics by two additional wind tunnels, modernises the existing facilities and improves integration within the growing complex.
The new building for the WEZ divides into three sections, the Aerodynamics Acoustics Tunnel (AAK), the Thermofunction Tunnel (TFK), and the workshop and office building. The workshop areas are arranged on two levels, which leads – in combination with the connection to the existing wind tunnels – to direct connections and short internal movement routes.
The test vehicles are received and prepared on the ground floor. The entry to the new and existing wind tunnels is at ground level or by a vehicle lift. With the vehicle, model and carpentry workshops, areas for carrying out rapid modifications on the test models are also close at hand. The second floor is connected directly to the lifts and accommodates the workplaces of a number of technical disciplines.
With the stringent, homogeneous building envelope made of vertical metal lamellas on the workshop building and the sculptural concrete form of the almost unclad AAK, the ensemble presents an effective contrast.
