Masterplan Kunstareal

Central information and orientation: commissioned by the Stiftung Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich, the comprehensive master plan study considers the current problems of the separate national museums and collections in the Maxvorstadt city district. The objective is bringing together the institutions into one group in a readily recognised Munich Art District with considerably more exhibition space than is available at present. The study starts with the analysis of the current deficits in which the needs of all collections in the Pinakothek der Moderne, the Alte Pinakothek and the Neue Pinakothek were considered in detail. A shortage of exhibition space and too few storage facilities, lack of orientation between the museums and collections were major aspects of the problem. The master plan study proposes a pedestrian square between the Pinakothek der Moderne and the Alte Pinakothek.

The new square is to have a central new building for ticket sales which will provide information and orientation to the visitors to all the institutions in the Munich Art District. The transfer of storage functions into the basement of the new building releases valuable exhibition space on the museum ground floors. The three Pinakothek museums are grouped around the central functional building and in future will be perceived as a coherent art district and island.
