Edge HafenCity

A new urban district is being developed in the western part of Hamburg’s HafenCity. The Edge HafenCity office building designed by HENN constitutes another important cornerstone currently under construction in the Elbbrücken neighborhood. This new build comprises two parts: a square-shaped seven-story structure and a tower that projects from it in the southwest corner, reaching a height of almost 60 meters.

Two-story arcades and an eight-meter wide, clear-span overhang mark the building’s main entrance at Amerigo-Vespucci-Platz. A central, publicly accessible atrium creates the communicating heart of the new building. An open staircase spirals around the central air space, interconnecting all seven floors. On each floor, terraced levels are created that are available to all tenants as common areas.

The building has been designed like a small town, including areas to meet, eat and relax, as well as co-working spaces and zones for focused work. The ground floor accommodates restaurant and conference facilities, while the upper floors house rentable office spaces. All users have access to the communal districts situated on various levels, while an encircling roof terrace is available for recreational purposes.

All roof surfaces of this energy-efficient building are designed as retention roofs and most of them are densely planted. The tower roof is equipped with photovoltaic panels for power supply. The building has a square grid and is composed of individual units that can be used flexibly. The façade’s red color scheme makes it blend seamlessly into the urban context of HafenCity. The new build is set to be granted the HafenCity Platinum and WELL Core Platinum labels.
